Bad Puppy post mortem

I just replaced my blower motor, '88 5ktq, since it had filled the car
with "smoke" one
morning while warming up in the driveway!!! After removal of the motor,
inspection
revealed that the brushes were toast, worn unevenly (in the direction of
armature rotation)
and the carbon section was well below the top of the brush
holder/guide. There was never
any indication that the blower was going bad, no squeeks or squeels af
any kind.
I think that the temp that morning, +9f, contributed to the event.
Higher current draw to get
the motor up to speed etc. The smoke was coming out from under the
plenum cover, as well
as the vents, since it was drawn into the system via the fresh-air door
on the pax side.
The accumulation of leaves, twigs, seeds and pine needles in the plenum,
as well as the blocking
of the vent grill in front of the windshield, will also cause the blower
to work much harder in trying
to draw air for the CC sytem. This is a prime cause for early blower
motor failure.......... at least
that has been my experience.
