I have also heard of this sort of fire being started by
leaves and assorted debris that found its way into the fresh
air inlet, coming to rest on the blower motor resistor,
which can get hot enough to ignite. This, of course, would
not be protected by a fuse. Back in my pre-Audi days, I
added a wire mesh screen to my MGB inlet, to prevent this
sort of thing. So, it's a good idea if you have an older
car to make sure the inlet is adequately protected. Either
that, or carry a fire extinguisher.
