It was said ............. "Very simple, Audi kept the same part number, so
if you have a can of the
"old" 7.1 it has the same part number as recommended on the 7.11S cars.
In other words, Audi has made two completely compatible fluids, using
either in any type 44 (or other application) is OK with Audi, BUT of
course, the more expensive synthetic stuff is just a little bit better,
and Audi thinks you shouldn't mind paying the difference".
But the truth is that there are TWO different part numbers: G 002 000 for
the mineral oil (7.1), and G 002 000A for the synthetic mineral oil (11S).
The suffix is used to differentiate the 2 products, and the products
themselves are different. As I recall, it is suggested that they not be
mixed, although it is OK to replace the earlier product with the newer one.
As the wholesale cost of 7.1 is almost exactly half of that of the 11S, it
makes perfect sense to me to continue using the original product where it's
called for. BTW, the designations "7.1" and "11S" are used by the
manufacturer, Pentosin, and are used here for descriptive purposes. Other
manufacturers, such as Febi-Bilstein, Castrol, and Girling use their own
internal designations. John
