Ian,
you must prepare the c/shaft and eradicate the groove prior to seal
installation. Its a must, as well as shaft lubrication and shaft
protection, for which you can use el. insulation tape to cover the v/key
slot end to overlap the end for at least the width of the tape, to help
you to ease the seal on the c/shaft safely. To eradicate the groove in
the c/shaft, use a strip of 600 grade wet and dry paper wound around the
crank and use only for aft radial motion, never axial. Light pressure
only. Lubricate and clean the paper often with WD 40 or similar. Takes
few minutes.
