I believe that it is different from American "12 point" in the angles on 
the points.  I'm pretty sure American 12 pt has 120 degree angles on the 
points (more like 2 hexagons offset at the points,) while German triple 
square has 90 degree angles (more like 3 offset squares,) and this is why 
they call it triple square.  JMHO. Incidentally I think this is why the 
Allen wrenches tend to strip out the triple square bolts, the angles don't 
match up right.
