Sam,
Ok, for starters you are on the right track with the relays. The most common problem with the 4000's is not the headlights, however (at least melting swithches). It's the marker lights. I have relayed several of these cars in the past, with good results. I use the right side marker in the front to trigger a relay for both of the front markers, and the right rear to trigger a relay for the rear taillights. I prefer the one not on the trunklid, since they occasionally have problems. You will have to use a wire from the front to feed the lights, unless you have put the battery under the rear seat as I have. You can also put a relay under the instrument cluster for the dash lights. Let me know if you want more specifics.

HELP!
I just melted my headlight switch on my '86 4000CSQ.
Actually- this is the 2nd one I've melted. After the first one- put in dual
headlight relays- with voltage coming directly from the alternator.
Melted the brand new one Wed. night driving home in the dark. Melted the
connector too!
Anyone have a spare connector for a headlight switch? Having difficulty
finiding one.
TIA
