Actually, the parking light circuit is pretty intensive - and usually 
the one that seems to start melting first - although it has three 
outputs, it is fed by one small input connector.  Relaying that circuit 
as well would help.  Although, I would agree that something like that 
should not be a problem on a beautiful piece of 18 year old German 
engineering...
