Honked like a goose? My Bosch BPV did that, but only when I had it installed backward.

Saturday I traveled through norteastern Ohio to Pa. in the worst driving conditions I have ever been in. After four years use, the first time I really appreciated quattro!
The Problem:
Soon after starting I noticed the mechanical vac guage and the digital dash guage indicated no vacuum.
Usually the mech guage reads 20" at idle and 10" at cruise. Now just barely 5" at idle and near zero at cruise. Digital told same story, 1.0 bar at cruise.
The engine idled OK, stalled when I loosened the oil cap, drove OK as far as I could tell, cruise control worked, fuel comsumption ok. Vacuum brakes still worked. (Yes they are).
Boost did seem to come on faster than I recall.  (Couldn't do much...snow, lots of snow!) At home Sunday searched for a vac leak. Used propane and then a stethoscope. Could'n find a thing so I began pinching hoses.
The line to the bypass made a difference. No leaks to the outside. I removed the line from the valve and plugged it and all is well.
Last time the bypass valve (034 165 710A) failed it limited boost. This time not! Must'a failed in different manner.
This valve is  Bosch 06A 145 710 N. It lasted 9 months and 12k miles. 
Honked like a goose from day one!
I think this time I'll seek an aftermarket valve.
