Suspensions and hammers

Yes I know about the hammer thing.  An old friend told me about that years ago.  It goes like this:
Place a small amount of force on the int threaded end, like 5-10 pounds and at the same time whack the suspension component and it will come apart.
I don't like the idea of hammering on the audi struts, as they look like formed sheet metal not cast like my other cars.  Seems like you could dent and damage the strut arm using this method.  I want a reference for a good tool that will not damage the tie rod rubber and cause more pain on this job.  Already broke one stainless brake hose doing the front springs.
BTW, anyone interested in a set of 4 SPAX springs for an 80Q?
The car is WAY low with these, too low for my driveway.
