FW: 98 A6 2.8 Display

Hey Folks, 
My parents have a 98 A6 and they are having some issues with the display
on the dash.  When the car is in park they get the standard warning
message about putting your foot on the brake.yada, yada, yada.  When
they put the car in gear, the display goes dark like when you turn it
off with the switch on the stalk.  It used to kind of flicker and then
stay on but now it is just off complety (no, pressing the button on the
stalk has no effect).  Is there a particualr under-dash connecter that
feeds this display.  It usually shows radio station and
tripcomputer/temp stuff.  My dad seems to think it started happening
after a recall was performed at the dealer.  Maybe they didn't get one
of the connectors plugged back in all the way?  Any thoughts,
suggestions?
