I don't know about the 98 A6Q, but on the 95 A6Q it is pretty easy to remove
the instrument cluster to get at the center radio display. I did this on the
wife's car when her instrument was misbehaving in a similar manner and it
took about an hour to get it out, spray electrical contact cleaner on the
connections and to reseat all the connectors. IIRC there are four screws that
hold the cluster and trim in place, and then the cluster can be pulled out.
Take a look through the V6-12V mailing list for the procedure that's where I
got it.
