I don't think the Audi thermostats last very long. The one in my '94 S4 is
only a year old and it's not holding engine temperature when ambient gets
down to -30 or so. If I slow down the temp comes back up, so I suspect the
thermostat is not closing completely. It works fine when ambient is
above -30. I've had this happen before and replacing the thermostat fixed it
(last year was an exception; it overheated when ambient got around -40 and I
had to slow down to keep it cool. Replacing the thermostat fixed that too).
I'm beginning to suspect replacing the thermostat should be an annual
maintenance item, unless I can find a better one somewhere.

My S-car is doing this (and yes, the temps fluctuate
enough to suspect the t-stat), but it's too COLD to
change the thermostat at the moment.
