We just had intensive session regarding timing belts. Check the archives for
Nov, Dec, Jan . . . search for author name "Denis".
He changed the topic name about 5 times, so jot down the changing topic
names. You might need a translator, but he got better with the english as we
proceeded with the diagnosis.
The Bentley has the pix for the belt alignment and TDC marks. If you need
the pix, I can send those to you. Drop me a line if you want the pictures of
alignment points.
How many miles since your last timing belt change?
You can do a leakdown test for each cylinder. That will tell you if the
valves are ok and sealing.
You can make your own tester.

> Well...I suppose I had it coming when I tempted fate (aka Audi gods) by
telling another lister last weekend that my 84 4ksq was running well and
that I had inadvertently fixed a chronic "hard start when cold issue" by
over-concentrating a fuel system/injector treatment. After running fine all
last week the car stalled at my local Cumberland Farms (CF) this morning
,..refused to start again, and spewed coolant out the bottom of the timing
belt cover. I foolishly assumed that my water pump had gone somewhere in
the CF parking lot where I had made three passes at trying to get to a gas
pump (who actually looks at arrows on the pavement near the pumps...right?),
that the engine had over-heated, the block had expanded and constricted the
pistons...and thus wouldn't start until everything cooled down (but I didn't
try again anyway). After having a flatbed deliver the car to my driveway
(less than a half-mile away), I ordered a water pump from a local Foreign
Autoparts store...ca
> lled work...pulled the timing belt cover...and gagged! The timing belt
was missing at least twelve teeth near the water pump...the loose teeth were
all over the place!

quarter-turn, then back,...slight cam movement will turn the distributor
rotor (currently on #5). Manual rotation will NOT turn timing belt.

> There were no pronounced noises (especially no "clunking") prior to the
timing belt going/car stalling. Knee-jerk guess is that the timing belt was
probably too loose, and that the sudden influx of coolant lubricated things
at the vibration damper and caused the belt to slip...and then lose
teeth...just a guess. Anyway... I have a few questions:

that cylinder" on the head)...do I pull the plug and check to make sure #1
piston is "all the way up"...and then the crank cam over to # 1 on the
distributor, somehow lock the cam pulley, and put the new timing belt on?

about BTDT's first. Also, I'll have to contact Blau to rent the tools,
(although I'd just as soon buy 'em (used) outright. I was always afraid of
this happening. Of course it had to happen in the middle of Winter. Guess
what I'll be doing outside on Super Bowl weekend. TIA
