Except that I can hardly stand to drive rental cars they are so uncomfortable for my back and neck. This car is a dream for me to drive.
I need to fix it until I can afford at new A8 which is the only Audi in the new lot I could stand to sit in because of the 16-way adjustable seats.

>Putting in a used motor (costing maybe $600 to get one from a supplier) makes sense if the rest of the car will last for at least a year and provide you with transportation that can keep your business running. Labor to put in the used engine...10 hours at $50/hr = another $500.....just guessing.

That's not too bad.

>But why did it overheat?

Thermostat was stuck. I told my husband that and he said that wasn't the problem. But it was. Also there was a small leak in the three-way hose, Also, but that is replaced now.

But the combination of the two the car would just not cool off for more than 10 minutes at a time.

>You still haven't said what the diagnosis was.

The first thing they found is cylinder head warped. That was from my hubby pouring cold water in a very hot car. He finally came to meet me about 1/4 of the way from Flagstaff. I had not eaten since 11 a.m. -- it was 4 a.m., and I told him I was going to leave the hood open and to NOT put water in it 'til it had cooled down and the car was RUNNING !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Of course being oppositional defiant to the max when I was in the bathroom he did just THAT! I cannot believe the stubborness and stupidity. If I didnt' love the car so much it would be just a financial issue. But the fact that I totally adored that car, and it was so comfortable for me to drive, and he knows I am a realtor (at least at one level in his brain, I hope), there was no excuse for that. First make me drive a car I wanted to leave to be fixed, and secondly to put cold water in a very hot car, is just plain AWFUL beyond words. And I am just sick at the total waste of time and parts I put into the car the last month to get it running great.
When it left Audi last time it was running pretty good, and after I put a new distributor and a few other things in there it ran GREAT.

>Maybe it needs a new cooling system and air conditioning system...... try to see the whole picture before you decide.

The car ran like total CRAP after he added that cold water !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It is major damage and I need a new engine. The people at AUDI are absolutely the best people at the North Scottsdale dealership. They have spent TWO DAYS on my car, replaced some hoses, and are only charging me $200.oo TOTAL !
They are also letting me keep the rental car an extra day all for free.

I would NEVER take my car any place else than there, except to maybe get this engine swapped out. They have been way more that decent to me every time I have gone there. And I can tell ya when I was on the East coast I got screwed plenty with my car. They are the nicest and most caring car people I have ever seen.

AND this car never ran right after that jerk in Sedona work on it. That was $1600 down the drain, I replaced a ton of stuff on this car since then....
If I could find another 89 Audi like this one, cheap, then I'd be in business!

Cheers, Fay
