How do I SAFELY dispose of a gas tank

I have thrown away many gas tanks right at he curb by removing the tank after 
draining all the fuel out, fill with water, drain water, poke holes in the 
tank so it looks like Swiss cheese. I use a huge breaker bar/digging post that 
has a sharp spear like tip on one side. The other side looks like a huge screw 
driver end. The trash guys should take it like that, they do here in South 
Jersey and also in Northern Virginia when I lived there. The scrap car guys also 
like it when that is done for them when they remove stripped cars from the 
property.
