Especially on older VAG products, that ground strap IS the main engine
ground. The engine grounds through the starter, not the other way
around. It's important to have full voltage and current available at
the starter for long life and good performance. Older VAG products
used terrible wire that often corrodes far into the jacket. Don't be
afraid to change over the primary wiring... usually a worthwhile
upgrade. I usually install 2 guage primary (battery to starter to
alternator as well as main grounds) wire which IS overkill... but I
like overkill. =)
