Of course, you're comparing apples and oranges - the top-of-the-line Audi
product (at the time) with current cars that are not their company's
flagship models....

The Mazda3 and 6 have both gotten very good write-ups, and I think it is
generally accepted that Mazda is the sportiest of the Japanese basic
brands (Toyota, Honda). Personally, I love the looks of the Mazda6 s -
especially the 5-door and wagon models. While I'm not crazy about the
add-on spoilers, I like the basic lines of the car a lot.

You did not mention your price range other than saying that the Murano was
too expensive. You may want to consider the Acura TSX. I drove that and
was very favorable impressed with the quality and features for the price.
I also like the Alfa-esque styling.
