Fuel Pump Relay question

1985 Audi Coupe GT.

So anyway... I'm not sure if the hall sender -test- would be of much
use, because -most- of the time, the hall sender -works- or else the
car would -never- run. So, I'm guessing 99% of the time, if it is the
hall sender, it'd test out OK.

Having watched the switch inside the fuel pump relay turn off a second
or two after the engine died, I have to say the fuel pump relay is not
the problem. Seems like the ECU decided to shut down the engine, and
shut the Fuel Pump Relay off after it killed the engine... That could
be because the Hall Sender quit sending the 4.5v square wave to the
ECU, or the ECU didn't see a signal from something else. I tested the
ECU's coolant temp sensor when it was cold, and it tested at 2700ohms
or so, which I'm told is in spec. I have NOT tested it when it's
hot...

What other things besides the Hall sender and the coolant temp sender
does the ECU freak out over if it isn't getting signal from it that
will make it shut the engine down?

That's what sucks about intermittent problems... they're hard to catch.

What about my idea of narrowing down what can cause these cars to
backfire? Half the time when it starts acting up, the engine drops
out and will backfire, then kick back in...

Oh, and sorry I keep forgetting that most of you aren't using Gmail.
Gmail connects all emails with the same subject (Re: Fuel Pump Relay
question) in to one subject line and amends the title with the number
of replies. So non-Gmail users have this conversation spread out over
60+ single emails with the same subject line, where as I have it all
under 1 subject line with a (63) at the end for the number of replies
within that subject link. Gmail just keeps adding "message windows"
under the original subject line, keeping them all together in one nice
little "message window after message window" tree. Great email
service to use for a list like this, because you get 2+ gig of email
storage for FREE, and it's searchable, so you can search all of the
list emails that you have in your inbox for the problem you're having.
I now have 1700 list emails in my inbox which is only 5% of the 2.2
gig of storage (and rising) I have :)

If anyone wants a Gmail account for free, let me know... I have 50
invites. Not even sure if you NEED an invite anymore to get in...
