I don't know who or why that myth continues to persist.  The fuel pump 
relay pinout is (probably intentionally) designed so that a simple SPST 
relay will not replace it - in order to preserve the "engine must be 
running" safety feature.

I don't know if this swap might work in the turbo (MC/MC2 etc.) cars, 
where the ECU has the final say in whether the fpr runs.  If that is the 
case, that's where the myth comes from - but it simply doesn't work on 
the CIS/CIS-E/CIS-E3 n/a cars.
