Since you have had smoke, crawl under the dash and look for the
burnt wires. It may be a connection that has corroded to the
point where its resistance is enough to overheat the wiring.
Once you find the burnt wires, you can then narrow the problem
down to the specific circuit.
My fiancee's son lost his/my '89 200 TQ to what we think was
the HVAC blower motor possibly freezing and the resulting load
overheated the wiring, causing a fire.
