overheat mystery

Car is a '87 5ktq. Driving in stop-n-go traffic, saw
steam, temp gauge heading east, holy crap, I pull over
and shut er down. Coolant is a'bubblin' and I let it
cool and take radiator cap off (it's only 1 yr. old).
I checked all hoses & clamps, saw no problems. No
leaks underneath either, and cap was tight. Weird. I
refilled w/coolant and continued w/heater on. (nice
when it's 85 outside...) This time the temp needle was
just about between the 2 dots, which almost never
happens, but never went beyond the second dot.
I tune it out, but I don't remember the cooling fan
clicking on at any point in this saga, nor after I
shut the car off. The likely culprit? Usually the fan
is clicking on/off all the time during rush hour
driving. Any other things to check?
