I think that even though it sounds like you were working with "good"
information, you ended up using the wrong wires.
In the Audi, the wire colors should be:
Brown - always ground (watch out for striped brown, they are usually
switched grounds)
Black/blue - ignition power
Red (rare) - battery power
As someone mentioned, the wire to the power antenna is probably white.
Your new head unit should have its leads identified (by stickers on the
wires, a label on the chassis, or at least in the manual - or maybe mfr
website?).
If you find the wires colored as I listed above, and double check them
all with a meter, you should be able to get everything working.
PS, check the fuses in the radio power leads.
