> Dan, perhaps your ME title has something to do with wanting the right tool and this crazy talk about "specs." What are specs? Is that what people wear to improve their vision? Just joking w ya!

Too funny Keith! I hope I can take a joke/jab with the best of them. I
sure give enough out :o) I often joke with the students about using the
'right tool for the job' while I'm currently prying something open with
a screwdriver.
With the CV joints I've done using the 'intended tools' I'm always
surprised how much tighter the spec is for the clamping force than I
would have done w/o the tool. But with that said....of all the CV joints
I did before having the tool/spec...none ever had a problem.
Mostly the 'ME' means I'm spoiled. Having the right tool can save a TON
of time and frustration. If I can spend $1.99 for a tool I swear at, or
$7.99 for one that makes the job easier, I'll spend the extra $5. Of
course, I still don't make much $$...so I don't have that vehicle lift,
which would no-doubt make *every* job easier :o)
No doubt, when you have the resources to make a tool, it's often cheaper
to do that than buy one. When it comes time to do the timing belt on my
Audi, I'll probably make (or borrow/rent) the crank tool rather than buy
one from Audi!
