I'm probably late on this one (catching up on the weekend's list
traffic), but I figure my statistics will probably throw the average
off. My commute to work is 1.5 miles one way, followed by a 1/4 mile
walk. My wife and I share rides to work most the time, and typically
take our civic HB or the Audi. Both cars see ~4000 miles a year each -
1/3 of which is usually from trips out of state. Most of my other cars
only see 200-500 miles per year - either sunny days, off-road trips, or
track miles. Needless to say, my oil changes can be done by calendar,
not by miles traveled :o)

The other thing that helps is that for 1/3 of the year, I usually bike
to work. The joys of a small town....even though we don't have any
spectacular places to eat, and have a pathetic car parts selection; you
can bike from one side of town to the other in 5 minutes :o)
