What upgrades are available out there for the MC engine?

That's all good and great, but the 20v motors are WAY too expensive and I
don't know why. Newer, higher output turbo JDM motors from Mitsubishi,
Honda, Toyota and Nissan aren't as expensive as the 200k+ junkyard 20V's
that I have seen.

That being said, the MC motor is what I decided to go with. Boost pressure
ether via a spring, or boost controller is an obvious source of gain. ECU
fuel maps are also well-known; however I plan to do EFI later on, so
spending money on the stock ECU is somewhat of a waste for me.

The upgrades I am looking for are like headers, intake manifolds, throttle
bodies, cams and things of that nature. The stock components on the car did
not look all that great to me. Rough, narrow, cast iron headers are
well-known power robbers. I would hope that in the near 20 years that this
car has been out, someone has thought up of an alternative. The intake
manifold could also use some help. The ports are narrow and the designers
obviously had absolutely no thought of equal length runners.

Many motors also have deficiency upgrades. I am not all that familiar with
the MC, but my Mitsu G72DETT can gain measurable horsepower from a crank
vent installed on the PCV port. I am sure that there are similar places of
improvement on the MC.

Just looking at the parts, the header looks to be the part most need
upgrading. Does anyone make one?

I assume you are going to raise the boost somewhat. There are stages
of what you can try -

  * A changed wastegate spring will get you from 1.3 BAR to 1.7 BAR
which has noticable results. That's going from 5 PSI boost to
about 11 PSI. I've got these for $35 with instructions.

  * A wastegate spring and ECU modifications can be even better. Try
Ben Swann at benswann at comcast.net I think he is doing ECU upgrades.

  * Another source of ECU and turbo modifications is Intended Acceleration,
     see http://www.intendedacceleration.com/

When you are planning the 4000 instalation, leave room for a big
intercooler.
That will let you run more boost than otherwise.

Going further can include turbo swaps, and different fuel injection.
Before you go too deep (read: expensive) with an MC engine, I'd recommend
that you find a 20V engine complete with it's ECU and wiring harness.
This engine has the potential for near 400 HP before you get into engine
internals like lower compression pistons and forged rods. Remember
these engines reached into the 600+ HP range for European rally cars.
