Used 4.2L A6's going cheap-what's up?

I've been looking for the right '00-'01 A6 4.2 for awhile now, and check on
eBay regularly to see what's available. From my experience, cars in the
sub-$20k range generally have 70k+ miles on them (especially true for
'01's). But they are still a pretty good deal over the 2.7tt considering the
possibility of turbo issues without Audi warranty (unless you want to pay
the premium for an Assured car). I have heard of some issues with the
tranny, but as with the A8, changing the "lifetime" fluid and filter at
around 50-60k seems to decrease the likelihood of failure. As with the
2.7tt, the front brake rotors warp, and I've heard complaints about engine
oil leaks. Outside of that, they seem pretty reliable. On the subject of
eBay, I just missed an '01 w/ 78k on it yesterday by a couple hundred
dollars. It needed a couple things (front wheel bearings, rear diff seals,
crack in front bumper), but sold "no reserve" for $16.5k (oddly enough, they
had it on AutoTrader for $20.9k).

I've noticed many 2000-2001 A6 with the 4.2 V8 selling for $14-20,000, way
below "book value".

Were these problem models? Any info on weak points is appreciated,
especially regarding the tiptronic.
