Okay. My friend tried driving the car home last night as it now seemed to run fine after letting it sit overnight, but alas it was not all cured. His comments below with some new clues maybe (gas smell)? Haven't had a chance to take anything apart yet and do any diagnostics.
Do we still think it's FP relay? Fuel filter? Something new? I'm starting to think more along the lines of a a contaminated fuel distributor.

I stopped by the car the next morning; it started fine; warmed it up for several minutes and moved it across the street to the super market lot. In the eve got a ride to the car. Started fine; warmed it up for several minutes and took off for home.
Got about 1-2 miles up the road, throttle response started to go away. Parked in a ambulance parking lot, started car but would only run 5-6 seconds then die; did this several times. Decided to try to get it up to the commuter lot within eyesight. Moved the car by re-starting half a dozen times moving down the road 5-6 seconds at a time. A couple of times the throttle seemed to respond and the car started to take off, then faltered.
Pulled into lot, then car seemed to sputter and want to go, so I pulled back out on the road. The car faltered, sputtered hard, then took off. I got my full throttle response back, and it ran better than the initial mile run when it had quit.
I ran it back to the house, approx 5 miles, in 3rd gear around 4000 rpm. without incident. After arriving, my friend who had followed me mentioned that during the first leg of the trip he smelled gas from my car as he was following me. After it started to run better on the last leg, he no longer smelled the gas, but I had gotten pretty far ahead of him.
Comments???
Thank Bys
