Random Questions Just because I'm thinking about them

I've been thinking for a while about selling my 2.8 A6 and buying a 4.2. I've kind of decided that I'll just keep the 2.8 for a while longer, but have started thinking about the maintenance and a couple of questions came to mind. 

How do you know when the rack needs to be replaced? 

Where do you get replacement nuts and bolts to replace them as you are working on different parts of the car?
