As I recall, the exhaust side of the sensor is coated with a metallic
coating of some kind and is sealed against such leakage. It is the
reaction between the oxygen in the exhaust at the coating vs the
oxygen of fresh air on the other side that causes a reference differential
voltage that can be read. In effect, it's like the dielectric effect, only in
a different medium (the ceramic vs. a saline solution).
