NAC: '90 Mazda Miata - return to idle

It is Auto related, just Audi related :-)

I am working on a '90 Mazda Miata for a friend. The problem is that when you
rev the car and then release the gas quickly, the engine dies. There is a
little circular pot, pointed on the top, with a plunger on the bottom which
makes contact with the throttle lever and slows it down as the revs decrease.
The revs go way down and the car sometimes dies.

There is an adjustment, and I have screwed it out so it starts to slow down a
lot sooner, but can't adjust it enough. I don't even know what they are
called. Does anyone know if these things get tired, or if there is something
else which is supposed to stop the car from stalling when you let off the gas
quickly?

Cheers
George
