90q What grade of Fuel? / compression

I used to fill up my VW Quantum Syncro with 93 Octane
and got about 400 miles to the tank of mostly city
driving. Normally fill tank up at BP/Amoco
But when gas prices went down, I scaled back to 89
Octane and lately to regular, 87 Octane. My gas
mileage went to 325-350 per tank. Started filling up
at Cumberland, cause is cheaper per gallon.
Last week I decided to fill up with 93 again (but this
time at Cumberland) and was quite surprise to get a
paltry gas mileage result. I had to fill up the tank
after 260 miles of diving.
Same driving conditions applied to all of the above;
Reving engine between 2500 and 3000 RPM and on
occassions to 3500 RPMs when passing.
So the additives each gas brand adds do make a
difference.
I for one won't be filling the tank with premium at
Cumberland because I actually get worse results than
when I use their lowest grade, 87.
