Well, thanks fellas for all the moral support and positive suggestions in the past 20 hours. I'm going to give Scott Justusson a call here in Chicago and begin looking for a used transmission, also. I'm sure between Scott and I and the rest of the Audi parts universe I'll get this thing worked out somehow and save the rest of the car in the bargain.
Yesterday I was pretty ticked off at the Universe, and many of you know the feeling, and I apologize retroactively if my tone in any of those emails was a little brusque.
I love this list, for the ideas and shared suffering: Mark Swanson, as part of his reply to me, sent me pictures of the synchros. from his '88 90q which suffered from a similar malady before getting even worse. Ugh! Reminds me of the episode of the Simpsons where the doctor tells Homer:
D: "We can't cure you, but we can tell you EXACTLY what you're going to die from."
H: "What a world we live in!"

Thanks, er, Mark. ;-)
I will keep everyone apprised of developments. The situation is not as bad as the photo above, yet, and I'm optimistic I'll get something worked out, even if it involves hosting a beer-and-grill barbecue for a couple of neighbors, etc., etc., and a little creative begging.
Cheers,
