Alex et al:
One day my tranny was perfect, then the next use it grinds third.
Not a simple issue, its a complex turn of events and a period of time bewteen
the events in the first sentence.

My throw out bearing whirred, the clutch was thinner than shaved steak, but
the synchro went because of what I did to get the car home when the car broke
down.

I leaned, really leaned on the stick into third to get the car rolling when
it died (no clutch action) that's what I believe killed my third gear synchro.

Since everything was perfect when the clutch failed, I never though I'd need
attention to the syncros during the clutch R&R.

When Greg test drove the repair and told me the 3rd gear synchro was "weak",
I knew I did it unknowingly in the attempt to get the car home and not be
stranded.

So the answer I think you'll find is YOUR assessment that the PO used 4th and
rested the hand on it, like the Audi manual tells you NOT to do. Why just
one syncro? Well I think I know why.......................

Skip fourth, save the cash, use the car.
