Checking the connector on the transmission first might be a good  
idea.  I believe it's a more common failure point and even if it  
isn't- it is easier to get to and check., because pulling the  
instrument cluster in the '89+ type 44's is a royal pain.  The  
cluster does fail quite a bit, but usually involving the  
backlighting, and lots of wonky things start happening (like the high  
beams causing the turn signal indicators to glow, the clock starts  
loosing time and the clock backlight goes dim, etc).

3-pin, driver's side, vertical(I believe).  Water can get in there  
and corrode the nickel-plated terminals.  Clean both halves thoroughly 
(ie the seal and surface it mates with; always do this if you find  
corrosion, because the connectors are weather-tight) and apply a  
little grease in the same areas; use DeOxit or similar to remove  
corrosion.  I wouldn't grease the pins themselves, dielectric grease  
might cut the signal too much.
