... the fact that the tach continued to work is perhaps the key fact IMO ... 
this means that the ECU was still trying to run the engine ... and I would 
say that you still had spark.  I'd hold off on the ICU for now at least. 
The only other items are air and fuel ... and you indicate that from your 
POV fuel should not be an issue.  While your situation seemed like the car 
was not experiencing any side to side motion when this occurred, I had a 
weird one on the '88 5KCSQA where the engine could flat die ... usually 
after a turn ... and the culprit was the funky "hose" for the crankcase vent 
system down on the back of the engine near the oil pan on the spark plug 
side.  As the deteriorated piece flops around it can supply a massive source 
of unmetered air to the engine.  I suppose you could have also had a 
situation where vacuum built up in the fuel tank, so even though your pump 
was working it could not overcome the suction ... make sure your crankcase 
ventilation system is functioning properly ...
