I haven't heard of many 2.8s with overheating issues. I would suspect
a clogged cooling system somewhere or perhaps a faulty fan (clutch,
motor, bad bearing, whatever). To be honest, I would be more concerned
that the head may be damaged if this is a recurring problem with this
car; who knows how long the car has been overheating?
The instrument cluster will need to be replaced in order to get the
info center working properly. I replaced my own for the same issue and
I created a tech article for it on AudiWorld.com. All together, it was
a $400 repair; $800 for the new cluster with a $400 core charge on my
old cluster. Your buddy will need a friend with a VAG-COM set up to
set the odometer on the new cluster.
