gerrrrrr noise

Since getting the 86 4000CS kq  on the road last week,
yesterday while driving home from work, a strange
noise developed.  Only heard when slowing down to
stop.  Sounds like a large engine spinning down, loud
gerrrr, slowly fading as you stop.  Not engine related
as you can rev the engine w/o the noise.  Can't  hear
at speed.
I'm thinking either dry CV joint, bearing or even dry
rear end.

ANy opinions?
