Anyone know where I can get a set of "instructions" on the V8 install?

Are you just looking for more power? Since you are going
to be paying someone to do the work, I don't think you
are looking for the challenge of an engine swap. In that
case, I think the 30V will be cheaper than the V8 swap,
and give you some more power than the 12V. But you may
still not be happy with its power.
What about a 1.8T swap? That engine will take some mods
for more power. But it will also cost more to install.
If you go that route, I'd sell the dead A4 and buy a
living A4 1.8T (or put a 12V in the dead A4 and then
sell it(. Going this route will probably a) take less
time, b) be easier to resell the car, and c) may not be
much more expensive than an engine swap.
That's my 2 cents.
