Clunking sound, rear suspension 88 5kq

There is not much in common between a fwd coupe rear suspension and a 5kq
rear suspension.
I have seen a few trap arm bushing that were tearing but never replaced any
and never had a noise I could attribute to them but that does not rule them
out.
I have a 93 S4 and a 96 A6q (both C4 chassis cars) that have almost
identical (to each other) clunk in the right rear. I suspect the rear
shocks. It is not real loud, my wife does not hear it. I have been hearing
it in the S4 for most of a year now and it has not changed significantly.
I've only put a couple hundred miles on the A6 so I'm not sure about how it
might progress. I put new shocks in the front of the A6 and plan on doing
the rear but after the front shocks, frt. & rr brake pads, frt. & rr rotors,
frt. & rr brake hoses, a frt wheel bearing and T-belt I don't have the
money.
