<<be *real* careful here - whose definition of reasonable are we using?>>

shape in my town for like $1500.

Very low price - when was the timing belt done? UFO brakes? Miles?
Tranny OK?

I need a car for work that is good in the snow,

Yes.

  decent on gas,

No. How about hell no.

and easy to fix for someone of reasonable automotive knowledge.

Not a chance - this car is one of the most complex vehicles on the
road. Most repair shops have never even seen one, and are very, very
afraid of them - and you should be very, very afraid of most repair
shops on this car. There's a REAL steep learning curve here, and tuition
is going to be expensive.

I'm looking to replace my 2002 Sable.

Good idea. But keep the Sable until you get the Audi properly sorted out.

5 cyl timing belt 2.5 hours labor, one special tool, under $100 in
parts, V8 timing belt 12 to 14 hours labor, six or eight special tools,
$800+ in parts. Just a hint . . .

If you are *very* handy, you can do this, but this car is NOT for
someone who isn't willing to get their hands dirty, and parts tend to be
expensive.

All that said, a properly running V8Q is an experience not to be missed
- there's *nothing* comparable.
