clicking/ticking noise...'88 90Q...199k

First, remove the vacuum pump push rod, if the noise goes away throw that  
piece of steel in the big box that has "AUDI PARTS" written on the side of  it. 
I've been about 4 years without the vacuum pump push rod and my '88  80Q runs 
fine and is very quiet on startup.
If it is lifters, quite often the noise will go away right after an oil  
change and slowly start ticking again after a few hundred miles (now this  
statement will open up the 'what type of oil filter are you using' can of  worms.
I've never had an exhaust leak on a Audi but from the leaks that I have  
heard, it's a different type of sound.
