Well....

Newer is nice.  Adn $800 for brakes, fronts at that, seems excessive. 
What needs to be done? Pads should be about $75/set, and rotors maybe 
$75/ea.  Figure 1.5 hours plus an alignment, and voila, new front 
brakes. Unless the calipers are baked, which is unusual.

I owned a 1991 90q20v, which is almost identical to the coupe quattro, 
except is a 4-door.  Warning, the trunk is small. My Boxster has about 
the same room in practicality!  But it was fun, and very durable. A 
more direct feel than the 93-4 90s, whcih were very nice Buicks, to a 
degree.

The 93 will have more torque, and probably a better interior.

The I5 is pretty bulletproof, as is the clutch. Which makes me wonder 
what happened to the clutch?  Mine went 165k miles, then I sold it to a 
friend who has driven it the last 5 years. Same clutch (about a billion 
strut tower bushings though).
