My experience is that you can easily replace the vac advance without R/R the distributor
The arm on the vac adv unit that extends into the dist can be pried up(when removing the old one) and pushed in and dropped into place(when installing the new one) with a long slender screwdriver.
You do have to pay attention and not drop screws when detaching and reattaching the adv unit to the outside of the distributor.
This is maybe a 30 minute job.
