BTDT, well kind of...

The shift rods can be taken apart. Difficult, but have done it. Socket, long
extension, and wrench. Would strongly suggest you also replace the other
cups on the "cross" linkage. (don't have a Bentley for the correct
terminology). It's actually a little easier if you drop the rear of the
trans a couple of inches so you can get at the shift rods and associated
parts. (Ensure you put trans back up to do final shifter rod adjustments) Do
not believe you'd be able to secure the washer with linkage in place.... 

 Couple of years ago I bought a parts car that had a bad transmission. I
asked if it was linkage or the trans, guy told me it was the trans... Too
make a long story short, it was the same problem, my son is now driving the
car!
