I use a copper reducer , small hose at one end (1/2) , and a bigger hose at the other end (1 1/4 i guess)

  weekend to a rotten breather hose (the one that goes down the side of
  the block). I fixed it temporarily with piece of copper plumbing pipe,
  but has anyone found a better system than the plain rubber (that rubs
  against a coolant pipe and has hot oil vapors circulating through it)
  hose?
