Series III coupe window regulator problems

 Hi Gang,

    My Brother has just seen the light and joined the world of Audi ownership. I havent seen it yet but it is a 1990 2.0E coupe non-q that came at a cheap cheap price.

 I have yet to explain about the need to pacify the Audi-gods with regular offerings of cups of Pentosin and wafers of flaky door lock material, but first he needs some help with Problem No1;

 The drivers side electric window cable is reportedly history. I've been lucky enough never to have this problem, but I seem to recall reading here that the recommended route is replacing motor and cables/mechanism with a known good secondhand item. 

 Could anyone confirm?
