In West Sacramento (10 miles from me) there is a coop
of companies working together to develop and promote
hydrogen fuel cell vehicles.
http://www.fuelcellpartnership.org/
My daughters 8th grade class went on a field trip
there last year and I went along. Was very
interesting. Toyota, Ford, Mercedes, Hyundai and
Volkswagen all have facilities there and we got rides
in some of the vehicles. I rode in a Mercedes (based
on a Smart), Hyundai SUV and a Japanese model Toyota
SUV with right hand drive, similar to a Highlander.
The fuel cell generate electricity to power the
electric motors and charge batteries. Similar to
current Hybrid vehicles but fuel cell instead of gas
engine and generator. Very quiet and very quick but
fuel capacity is a problem. There are 5 hydrogen
fueling stations in N Cal. (W. Sac, San Jose, and SF)
and 9 in the LA area, the distance for N.Cal stations
to S.Cal stations is close to twice the range of any
of the vehicles here.
Other problem, this vehicles cost about $4 million
each!
Fuel cost was similar to gasoline last year, so
probably a little cheaper. There cost comparison
factored in the reduced fuel required to go the same
distance. The actual cost of the hydrogen will be
significantly more per pound than gas.
Just yesterday on the way home I followed a Toyota
Hydrogen vehicle for several miles on the freeway. It
might have been the Toyota I rode in last year. It was
a Japanese model SUV with right hand drive, similar to
a Highlander.
There are a bunch of new safety issues with Hydrogen
but they have solutions for them. Saw a video of them
dropping a car, from 2 stories up, on to a full
hydrogen fuel tank.
It will take some pretty high gasoline prices to make
these economical.
Take Care
