Eric,
I did not see any replies to this yet, I hope I can help.
Have you gone thru the whole fuel mixture/idle speed adjusting procedure?
If so, it sound to me like your oxygen sensor is old and slow to react. The
system is designed to go from a little rich to a little lean and back and
forth. When the oxygen sensors get old the react too slow and the system
starts going a lot rich and then a lot lean and so on. Unless you know the
sensor is new I would suggest replacing it. 86 should use a heated sensor
(3-wire) and you can get generic 3-wire sensors and splice it on to the OE
harness. 4kq's are a PITA to replace but will pay off on gas savings and
performance.
