It won't go into gear!!

My 84 4kq had the same problem in heavy stop and go traffic. I could not get it in first gear while the engine was running, it seemed to shift fine otherwise. I changed the master cylinder, same problem, two weeks later I changed the slave cylinder, it works better than ever now. Those two cylinders work in conjunction each other and should probably be changed as a pair. The master cylinder is easy to change. The only thing hard on the slave cylinder is the roll pin that holds it in place.

Subject: It won't go into gear!!

  Hi all!!

I got my '87 VW Quantum Syncro (same drive
train/tranny as the 4KQ) started last evening after a
top end engine rebuilt, and when I went to put it
into first gear for a test drive, the shifter would
  not budge at all!!!

Left it in neutral, as always when parked, and engine
  started right up.

Clutch pedal feels the same as before engine rebuilt,
  which was working just fine.

If I try pushing the shifter a bit, with engine
idling, the grinding would start. Yes, with the clutch
  pedal all the way in.

I turned the engine off and still, it will not get
into any of the gears except second and reverse. While
engine is idling, it won't get into second or reverse
  either.

Left it in reverse with the clutch pedal all the way
in and tried to start engine and the car stalled and
moved back about 2 feet, and engine did not start.
Immediately following, I had a hard time (but careful
not to damage shifting gear) placing the shifter back
  into neutral.

Just a week before I first put the engine back
together (first week of march), I was able to shift
nice and smooth into all gears.

Liquids are fine and the car doesn't appear to have a
leak in the tranny area, either.

It took me about 5 months to do the rebuilt since I
work on it only on spare moments, busy with work and
stuff; so car sat about that long.

  What went wrong now????

  Slave master cylinder?

  Stuck Clutch?

Thanks in advance for your replies!!

  -Louis
