A8 Stalling

Hi,

A fellow worker has had a problem with his 1999 A8 4.2Q.  When he comes to a hard stop, the engine stalls.  His mechanic has never worked on an A8 before and is having trouble finding the source of the problem.  He wants to know if there is a way to read the fault codes without using vag-com software?  Can you blink out the codes using the check engine light on this model?  TIA for any help.
